Personally Providence: Matt Bird of The Curatorium
Take a “behind the scenes” walk in Fox Point with Matt Bird, a Providence local with a personal passion for the neighborhood, and many years of accompanying his dog on long walks in the neighborhood. Bird’s shop, The Curatorium, on Wickenden Street, adds a new flavor to the area he has lived in for 25 years. Bird is a RISD graduate and was crucial in opening the risd works store. Come hear what the artist and entrepreneur finds of architectural value in Fox Point. Tour starts at The Curatorium, 197 Wickenden Street. Contact Dalila Goulart for more information. Peace and Plunder:
John Russell Bartlett, Albert Gallatin, and the U.S-Mexican War
John Russell Bartlett, then a young bookseller, and the retired statesman Albert Gallatin launched a public relations campaign in opposition to the Polk administration's war against Mexico in 1846-1848. While the two men emphatically opposed the war, they looked forward to the new information coming to light on the Native peoples of Mexico, California, and what would become the U.S. southwest. This talk by NERFC scholar Dr. Sean Harvey is presented in collaboration with the John Russell Bartlett Society. Dr. Harvey received his Ph.D. from the College of William & Mary and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History Department at Northern Illinois University.
