Our Way of Making an Exhibit

Ann Fienup-Riordan of the Calista Elders Council, the primary heritage organization in southwest Alaska, will discuss the exhibition she curated with the Calista Elders Council and the Anchorage Museum entitled Yuungnaqpiallerput/The Way We Genuinely Live:  Masterworks of Yup'ik Science and Survival.  The exhibition, soon to travel to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, explores the scientific principles and processes practiced by the Yup'ik that enabled them to survive the conditions of the sub-arctic tundra.  Yuungnaqpiallerput is described by Dr. Fienup-Riordan as being much more than a science exhibit.  Combining art, science and culture in new and exciting ways, it is as much about the present as the past, and recognizes that the Yup'ik way of life is grounded in deep spiritual values and scientific principles.  In this presentation, Dr. Fienup-Riordan will share the process of creating an exhibit collaboratively with the Yup'ik people.  Reception to follow.
