RiverWalk: Before the Fires are Lit
After the arrival of Roger Williams in 1636, rivers shaped the life of the city of Providence. The Colonial waterfront was the site of a thriving shipping economy for a young town. Eventually, factories and railroads turned attention away from the rivers and toward the land. After the 1950s, highways and bridges covered the waterways, and the rivers were forgotten. But that was yesterday! Today, architects and city planners are creating a “new” waterfront. Once again, the rivers take center stage. And no event commands more attention than Barnaby Evans’ WaterFire. Smartly designed walkways, parks, and pedestrian bridges invite strolling, especially on summer evenings. Urban outdoor sculpture and beautiful civic and commercial buildings of varied architectural styles provide the setting for stories of Providence’s fabled past and dynamic present. This walk shares the history of Rhode Island’s capital city and the history of WaterFire.

New Speaker Dr. Jonathon Day Jonathon will be speaking on has been involved in the destination development and tourism marketing for over 15 years. In 2001 he established Placemark Solutions, Inc a consulting and marketing company focusing on the specific needs of destination marketers. During the past 15 years Jonathon has been instrumental in developing marketing strategies that deliver real, long term results for international tourism destinations. He has undertaken successful marketing campaigns for two of the South Pacific's most successful destinations - New Zealand and Australia's Great Barrier Reef State, Queensland. Ron Anzalone from Preserve America Ron is coming to our conference! He'll will be speaking on Wednesday and Thursday, October 15 and 16. Ron Anzalone is the Director, Office of Preservation Initiatives, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (an independent Federal agency). Ron has been involved in historic preservation and public policy at the Federal level for nearly 30 years, and since 2003 has had lead responsibility for the national Preserve America initiative with the White House and the Executive Branch. In 2006 he served as program director for the Preserve America Summit in New Orleans, part of the National Historic Preservation Act's 40th anniversary celebration. On Exhibit: Images of “the Great War” from Providence Public Library’s Circulating and Special Collections
Now through July, in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day (November 11, 1918) which ended “the Great War” (World War I) -- Providence Public Library has mounted a presentation of photos and graphic artwork from the Library’s circulating and special collections which relate to the era in which the Old World died and the age of modernity was born.  Included are pictures, posters, sheet music, and even cartoons of the era. This exhibition is on display at the Central Library, 150 Empire Street, Providence, in the third floor exhibit area (outside Special Collections).

Around The Block Rhode Island Preservation News July 18, 2008 Preseve Rhode Island News PRI awards $5000 in mini-grants Preserve Rhode Island (PRI) is pleased to announce that five preservation projects from around the State have received seed money from the Preserve Rhode Island - Citizens Bank Foundation Mini-Grant program. Through the generosity of the Citizens Bank Foundation, PRI established the mini-grant program in 1999 to provide seed money for a wide range of historic preservation projects in Rhode Island. In the past nine years, the mini-grant program has provided nearly $72,000 for 71 preservation projects statewide. The following are the Spring 2008 grant recipients: Bristol Art Museum has received $1000 to help offset the cost of hiring an architecture firm to create preliminary architectural drawings/schematics for the adaptive reuse of the Linden Place Carriage Barn, the future home of the Bristol Art Museum and a community art center. Pawtuxet Village Association (PVA) in Cranston has received $1000 to help support costs associated with the creation of marketing materials, petitions, cards, letters, copies of documents, and other education materials to distribute information to the community on the benefits of local historic district zoning on the Cranston side of Pawtuxet Village. With community support the PVA will seek local historic district zoning in the area. LaFarge Restoration Fund at the Newport Congregational Church has received $1000 to help offset the cost of hiring a consultant from Partners for Sacred Place's to conduct the "New Dollars New Partners for Your Sacred Place" training program in Rhode Island. Results of the training will be comprehensive, written Restoration and Preservation Plans and, when appropriate, Fundraising Plans for participating congregations' places of worship. American Legion Warren Post No. 11 has received $1000 to help offset the cost of hiring an architect to complete plans for the restoration of the Warren Artillery Company Armory. The goal is to restore the building and have it once again be a centrally located facility for the community and the new Warren Veterans Council to enjoy. Westerly Land Trust has received $1000 to help offset the cost of hiring a consultant to nominate the Dr. John Champlin Glacier Park in Westerly to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District. The Historic District designation will be used, through signage and programs, for education and to develop appreciation for the preservation and stewardship of historic and cultural sites. Governor Lippitt House Open for the Season Tours offered on Fridays The Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum is open for the summer season with tours offered every Friday through October. Tours are $10 per person and begin on the hour from 11:00am to 3:00pm, with the last tour starting at 2:00pm. Group tours and private tours must be scheduled in advance by calling 401-453-0688. Group discounts are also available. A National Historic Landmark, the 1865 Lippitt House has been named by the New York Times as one of the most authentic and intact victorian houses in the country. Recent discoveries of elaborate faux finishes and stenciling beneath layers of 20th century paint are in the process of being restored and can be viewed on the tour. Statewide News Bookswap at Saylesville Friends Meeting House The Saylesville Friends Meeting House invites the public to their monthly bookswap on Saturday, July 19 from 10am to Noon at 374 Great Road, Lincoln. The bookswap is held every third Saturday of the month as a way to invite the greater community into the historic property. The 300 hundred year old meeting house is one of the oldest continuously used meeting houses in the country. Come and explore this historic property while enjoying this non-denominational event.
