A Fox Point Fourth of July
On Saturday, July 5, the scheduled 11:00 a.m. walking tours will be a patriotic stroll through the Fox Point neighborhood. Come celebrate the life and works of Providence native George M. Cohan, the original Yankee Doodle Dandy. He was born in one of the oldest and most diverse neighborhoods in Providence, and is associated by his birth and patriotic songs, with the Fourth of July. Learn about the ever-changing character of Fox Point, from its first colonial settlements through the waves of Irish, then Portuguese and Cape Verdean immigration, to the impacts of urban and highway development today. The tour begins at Reflections Café, 8 Governor Street, Providence. $10 per person.

Providence Public Library Announces New History High Jinks Book Club at Central Library!

In this landmark biography of our first president, Joseph J. Ellis brings the exacting scholarship, shrewd analysis, and lyric prose that have made him one of the premier historians of the Revolutionary era. Training his lens on a figure who sometimes seems as remote as his effigy on Mt. Rushmore, Ellis assesses George Washington as a military and political leader and a man whose “statue-like solidity” concealed volcanic energies and emotions.

Images of “the Great War” from Providence Public Library’s Circulating and Special Collections
Now through July, in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day (November 11, 1918) -- which ended “the Great War” (World War I) -- Providence Public Library (PPL) has mounted a presentation of photos and graphic artwork from the Library’s circulating and special collections which relate to the era in which the Old World died and the age of modernity was born.  Included are pictures, posters, sheet music, and even cartoons of the era.
PPL has thousands of items documenting the war and its impact in our circulating, Special, and Rhode Island Collections. This exhibition is on display at the Central Library, 150 Empire Street, Providence, in the third floor exhibit area (outside Special Collections)
