Familiar Voices: Salty Brine & Warren Walden
Helen York speaks on Rhode Island Radio in the 1940s and 1950s.
In today's world of Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern, the kind of radio host that reminded kids to say their prayers and brush their teeth seems almost impossibly wholesome. Come hear Helen York speak about Salty Brine and Warren Walden, two such radio personalities who were emblematic of a time when radio was the electronic town meeting. York is a writer and radio producer currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Media History at the University of Maine. She received a New England Regional Fellowship Consortium award to support research on her thesis, “Sound and Silence: Enfranchised and Disenfranchised Radio in New England.”

Collection Event for “Going to Work” exhibit
The Rhode Island Historical Society is pleased to announce plans for a new exhibit at the Museum of Work & Culture in Woonsocket. “Going to Work: 20th Century Settlers in the Blackstone Valley” will look closely at the people who moved to the Blackstone Valley area in Rhode Island during the twentieth century to find work. The Collection Event is an opportunity to share your family’s photos, letters, postcards, diaries, recipes, etc. with the Historical Society. Staff will be on hand to listen to your family’s story and scan your items. We are especially interested in, but not limited to, gathering the Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Jewish, Haitian, Asian, and Latino experiences. The John Clarke Society will celebrate the 400th birthday of Dr. John Clarke, founder of Newport, RI and author of the Charter of 1663 establishing freedom of religion and separation of church and state for the first time in history.
Ambassador Wm. J. Middendorf II and Rev. Paul Hanson D. Min. will address the audience. Birthday cake and punch for all will follow the celebration; members are invited to a private luncheon in the Carpenter Board Room.
The event will be at the historic Redwood Library & Athenaeum's Peter Harrison Room. It is free and open to all.
