Urban outdoor sculpture and beautiful civic and commercial buildings of varied architectural styles provide the setting for stories of Providence’s fabled past and dynamic present. If These Walls Could Talk…. A Look at Gravestones and Burying Grounds
Robert P. Emlen, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of American Civilization and curator at Brown University, studies issues of historical representations of place, including the burial grounds of 18th and 19th century America. Emlen will discuss how we can understand local history by studying the gravestones around us as primary documents.

The Rhode Island Historical Society presents Home Movie Day 2009!
Do you have home movies on film you haven’t seen in years? Don’t throw them away -bring them to Home Movie Day. Don’t have any films of your own? Come on down and watch someone else’s! Local film archivists will be on hand to discuss film preservation, home movies, and amateur films of regional interest. Bring your home movies and/or amateur films on 8mm, super 8mm, and 16mm to be screened, (sorry, no video) on the following drop off days: Saturday, October 10, Wednesday, October 21, Thursday, October 22, and Friday, October 23 from 10 – 5 pm. Drop off location is the Rhode Island Historical Society Library, 121 Hope Street, Providence. The films you bring need not have been made by you or your family. Films will be screened on a first-come, first-serve basis. Screen time is limited. We will show as many films as time allows.

The John Clarke Society will celebrate the 400th birthday of Dr. John Clarke, founder of Newport, RI and author of the Charter of 1663 establishing freedom of religion and separation of church and state for the first time in history.
Ambassador Wm. J. Middendorf II and Rev. Paul Hanson D. Min. will address the audience. Birthday cake and punch for all will follow the celebration; members are invited to a private luncheon in the Carpenter Board Room.
The event will be at the historic Redwood Library & Athenaeum's Peter Harrison Room. It is free and open to all.
