Museum of Work & Culture 10th Anniversary Gala
Join the festivities with the Museum of Work & Culture as they celebrate ten successful years of public education and many more to come! Musical entertainment will be provided by French American singer Lucie Therrien and Pendragon. Refreshments include “Taste of Quebec” cheese and beer, plus hor d’oeuvres and wine. The museum will be kicking off their Endowment/Capital campaign and special guest speakers will be present as well. Tickets are $50 per person.

RICH Grantee Project: In Search of Madame Jumel
Eliza Jumel was a self-invented woman and one of the most enigmatic of nineteenth-century America. Desperately poor in her youth and the daughter of a Providence prostitute, she may have followed her mother’s trade for a while. She then transformed herself by using her beauty and wits to become one of the wealthiest women in New York high society, and went on to marry former vice-president Aaron Burr. Please join us in welcoming award-winning teacher, researcher, and writer Dr. Jane Lancaster as she speaks about her latest investigations in trying to recover the real Madame Jumel as she rose from rags to riches. This lecture is part of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities’ celebration of Arts and Humanities month during October.

If These Walls Could Talk...“Hi Neighbor, Have a ‘Gansett!”
Come have a ‘Gansett while learning about how Narragansett was once the number one beer in New England. Providence native Hazel B. Turley will speak about her new book entitled Narragansett Brewing Company, published as part of the Arcadia Images of America series. Turley first began collecting the stories, memories, and mementoes of the Narragansett Brewing Company’s past employees and fans in 1998, and has since accumulated an impressive collection of oral interviews and over 300 photos. Join us while Hazel shares her extensive research on the Brewing Company’s history and enjoy some classic Narragansett beer at the same time!

RICH Grantee Project: The Story of Doris and Leah: A Rhode Island Chinese American Chronicle
Brown University professor John Eng-Wong first met Doris Fong thirty years ago and soon realized that she was a key figure in the history of Rhode Island’s Chinese community. Later in life, Doris discovered that she was adopted as a child and that her birth name was Leah Woo. Doris is one of a rapidly diminishing number of survivors from the time when there really was a “Chinatown” in Providence. Eng-Wong has been working to record Fong’s recollections as a way to begin preserving the story of Chinese Americans in Rhode Island. Join us in viewing the resulting slide show that uses Doris’ life as a way of understanding the circumstances of a mostly understudied group in Rhode Island. This lecture is part of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities’ celebration of Arts and Humanities month during October.

Before the Fires are Lit: Exploring the Providence Riverwalk
This hour-long tour explores the revitalized historic waterfront that, at sundown, becomes the site for WaterFire, an outdoor art installation centered on the spectacle of bonfires blazing on the waters of Providence’s urban rivers. Tickets are $10 per person.
