Cassius Clay Changes His Name to Muhammad Ali, 1964
After winning the heavyweight championship in 1964, Cassius Clay publicly changed his name to Muhammad Ali and revealed that he was a member of the Nation of Islam. At the time, Ali's choice was extremely controversial and while his choice represented freedom from the past's 'slave name', it put him at odds with the boxing, media and political establishment. The panelists will discuss the role of the Nation of Islam on African American political activism in the 1960’s, Ali as a polarizing figure in 20th Century America and the role of athletes in today's political climate.
