Around The Block Rhode Island Preservation News October 19, 2007 Preserve Rhode Island News Celebration of RI Geotourism Initiative held at IMAX On October 18th guests celebrated the Rhode Island Geotourism initiative and welcomed the new Executive Director of Preserve Rhode Island, Valerie Talmage, as they enjoyed a deep-sea themed cocktail reception and entertainment by the world-renowned puppeteers BIG NAZO! Governor Carcieri expressed his enthusiastic support of the Geotourism initiative and praised Rhode Island's unique and beautiful natural and historic resources. Guests were also treated to the exclusive premiere of Journey Over Rhode Island (click to view on YouTube), a short film from the Rhode Island Tourism Division showcasing aerial views of some of Rhode Island's most beautiful natural and historic destinations. The evening was concluded with a screening of National Geographic's spectacular new film Sea Monsters 3D: A Prehistoric Adventure. Geotourism was developed by the National Geographic's Center for Sustainable Destinations (CSD), which is dedicated to protecting all the world's distinctive places through wisely managed tourism and enlightened destination stewardship. The core strategy for achieving this mission is geotourism, which is defined as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place-its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. Working with many allied organizations, both global and local, CSD helps develop and disseminate information for adopting the geotourism approach-by destination communities, by tourism professionals, and by travelers themselves. Statewide News This regionally focused forum is geared towards Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut tourism practitioners, community policy makers and shapers, educators, students of tourism, elected officials, and others interested in sustainable tourism. Place-making views economic development in a whole community context. Therefore, thoughtful economic development takes responsibility for the quality-of-place to be attractive to residents, investors and visitors. Tourism is a key component to the development of a whole community and it should play a crucial role in advancing progress in a community. Thoughtful tourism development enhances a place by differentiating it from other places/destinations by using its cultural, natural, historical, human, educational and built resources.
