Based on his book, “The Diaspora Strikes Back: Caribeño Tales of Learning and Turning,” Professor Juan Flores will explore some of the dimensions and implications of the reverse flow of Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban culture and the challenges that it represents to dominant assumptions of the national cultures.

*Rice, beans, pork, empanadas and maduros will be served.

Dr. César Rey will raise questions about the origins and evolution of the concept of Puerto Rican nationhood and identity from a historical, sociological, educational, and political perspective.

Professor Giannina Braschi will debut a lively and dramatic piece about Puerto Rico’s political and economic relationship with the United States. This theatrical piece stresses the collision between the Latin and Anglo worlds.

Islander-Mainlander Discussion

Thursday, April 9th - 6:30 PM, Smith-Buonanno Lobby

What does it mean to be Puerto Rican?  Professor Garcia Coll and Professor Otero Garabis will lead a discussion that focuses on the division that exists between Puerto Rican Islanders (those from the island) and Mainlanders (those from the US).

*Empanadas and guayavitas will be served.
