Working on an Unusual Canvas: The Art of Pysanky
The egg has been a symbol of life in the Ukraine and other Slavic countries since ancient times. It was customary to give decorated eggs denoting stages of life in the spring. Colorful symbols representing nature and passed from mother to daughter enlivened the surfaces of eggs called pysanky. With the acceptance of Christianity, pysanky entered the Ukrainian Easter tradition as a symbol of rebirth blending pagan and Christian customs.
Father Paul Luniw (St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Terryville, CT), will demonstrate the art of pysanky, in Manning Hall, from 10 a.m-noon on Saturday, March 14th, and will discuss its history at 2 p.m. On Sunday March 15, Father Luniw, an internationally recognized Master of Pysanky, will lead two free workshops for children and adults at 1-3 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. Please note that the workshops are full but visitors can watch and learn! An exhibit of Fr. Luniw’s eggs will also be on display both days from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
