Get to know the heart of the city you’ll call home for the next few years! On Saturday, September 13th, The Providence Foundation and Downtown Improvement District welcome local college students back to Providence for the Downtown Student Experience, in partnership with CW28 and WBRU.
The afternoon will be filled with live music, information-sharing and free activities in Biltmore Park, adjacent to the Bank of America Skating Center in Kennedy Plaza. We invite you to listen to the sounds of WBRU, beginning at 2:00 PM, while sampling coffee, eating lunch, and checking out maps and performance schedules. Participants include CW28, WBRU, RIPTA, Cox Communications, tazza caffe, Benders Caffe, the City of Providence, Gold’s Gym, Boston Sports Clubs, the Providence Downtown Improvement District, McFadden’s, Ri-Ra, Dunkin’ Donuts, Rhode Ilin Ice Cream and many more.
At 3:00 PM, students will meet some of Providence’s most beloved characters when life-size Big Nazo puppets arrive at the park. At 4:00 PM, Providence Black Repertory Theatre will kick off the live portion of the program with a brief spoken word performance. Immediately following, WBRU welcomes three amazing local bands, LLOVE, the Jesse Minute, and Innocent Uprising, appearing on stage until about 6:30 PM.
In addition to the Downtown Student Experience, we encourage students to explore the vibrant new shops, restaurants, and arts organizations located in our neighborhood. A variety of downtown events have been scheduled that day to add to the festivities:
- Don’t miss a sample sale on Westminster Street! Throughout the afternoon, merchants like Symposium Books, Butterfield, OOP!, Homestyle and Queen of Hearts will offer limited-time discounted merchandise that you’ll want to grab! The sale takes place on Westminster Street (between Eddy and Union).
- Big Nazo Labs will be open for visitors at 60 Eddy Street!
- Fountain of Youth skate shop at 60 Eddy Street is organizing a skateboard demonstration from noon to 4:00 PM inside the Skating Center. Owner (and professional skateboarder) Donny Barley hosts a “Come Skate With Us” for local skateboarders and their families. This event is supported by four other shops within 50 miles—from Boston to Westerly—with shop owners competing in a S.K.A.T.E. competition.
- At dark, a surprise outdoor cult classic film will be shown on the screen at Grants Block, on Union Street between Westminster and Weybosset, presented by Movies on the Block.
- That evening, the fire continues to burn, with Waterfire starting at 7:00 PM, sponsored by Waterplace Luxury Residences and the Northeastern Society of Orthodontics. The ballroom stage will be set up at Turks Head Plaza, with lessons beginning at 7:00 PM.
