New Urban Arts is a non profit arts organization devoted to high school students. For 11 years, New Urban Arts has encouraged artists from around Rhode Island (especially Providence) to express themselves freely in a creative and safe environment.
Please join us!! We want Providence residents (current and former) to express their thoughts, ideas, opinions, and suggestions to the city we know and love. We are collecting letters to, for, and about Providence.
This summer, we are practicing creative acts of correspondence and mail art. We have found that we love getting mail as much as we love sending it!
Please join us. We want Providence residents (current or former) to express their thoughts, ideas, opinions and suggestions to the city we know and love. We are collecting letters to, for and about Providence.
Here is how you can participate:
1. WRITE A LETTER THAT BEGINS “DEAR PROVIDENCE,”
The letter can be long or short. Handwritten or Typed. Sealed with an envelope or
scribbled onto a napkin. Write a love letter to Rhode Island's capital. Write a hate letter to your least favorite memory of Providence. Or a goodbye letter to a Providence landmark that is no longer there, but still used when you give directions. Write a list of things you’ve lost and things you’ve found in Providence. Draw a map to your favorite picnic spot or illustrate a conversation you overheard on RIPTA. Send Providence a postcard that details your summer travels. It’s up to you!
2. DELIVER YOUR LETTER TO US.
There are a series of funky, one-of-a-kind mailboxes located throughout the city. Check our website, newurbanarts.org for specific mailbox site locations. They will be taken down in September 2008. No stamps required. If you don't mind the cost of a stamp, mail your letter to 743 Westminster Street Providence, RI 02903. Or email us at info@newurbanarts.org with "Dear Providence" in the subject line.
