LOST: Former Police and Fire Headquarters
At 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1, demolition began at the former Police and Fire Headquarters at 197 Fountain Street in LaSalle Square, downtown Providence. The Police and Fire Headquarters is included on PPS’s 2007 Most Endangered Properties List, which was released on May 8. PPS strongly advocated for the preservation of the building but in the end a demolition order from a city building official allowed developers, The Procaccianti Group (TPG) of Cranston, to bypass the review process and obtain a demolition permit. TPG does not have immediate development plans for the site and it will remain a surface parking lot for the foreseeable future.

Brown University Successfully Moves Historic Peter Green House
From Brown University: “During the week of July 30th the face of the campus witnessed a major change as the Peter Green House moved from its existing foundations at 142 Angell Street to its new home on Brown Street. It was an exciting week which started the morning of July 31st as the first wheels rolled under the 300 ton house. University faculty and staff, students, community members and children of all ages gathered throughout the week to join in the excitement, ask a few questions, and take a few photos. The house reached its final resting place over the new foundations on the morning of August 7th. The existing site has taken the first step of its transformation into one of the new open green spaces on the Campus Walk. Restoration and renovation of the Peter Green House at its new location is well under way.”

PPS Children’s Heritage Education Unveils Three New Tours – BOOKING NOW!

*THE CREST OF COLLEGE HILL, A LATE 19TH CENTURY VICTORIAN JOURNEY**NEW TOUR!** While the tours can be adapted to any age group, PPS is developing supporting curriculum for five of the tours following the scope and sequence of the Providence Schools curriculum. The H.P. Lovecraft Tour is geared toward the 10th grade.

PPS HISTORIC HOUSE SPECIALIST REALTOR TRAINING SEMINAR FULL FOR 2007
PPS is pleased to report that registration for its intensive two-day training session designed to help Realtors market historic homes is full for 2007. The 2008 seminar is scheduled for October 23-24, 2008. Registration for that seminar will begin February 1, 2008. Seminar graduates will be certified as Historic House Specialists by the Providence Preservation Society and authorized to use the PPS Historic House Specialist logo. The course is certified for 10 hours of CE credit by the RI Division of Business Regulation Real Estate Division, and is endorsed by the Greater Providence Board of Realtors. Some topics to be covered by local experts in their field include:
* Architectural Styles of Providence's Historic Homes * Historic House Interiors * Historic Districts and How They Impact Homeowners * How to Research the History of a House Participants will receive a copy of A Field Guide to American Houses. The seminar also includes lunch on day one. A field trip to a preservation trades workshop plus a bus tour featuring Providence's historic neighborhoods and architectural styles will take place on day two.

Volunteers “Storm the Arsenal” Versus Graffitti on Bastille Day
On Saturday, July 14, Bastille Day, the Providence Preservation Society, the College Hill Neighborhood Association, the District 9 Providence Police, and the Mayor’s Graffiti Task Force, in partnership with Councilman Cliff Wood, Councilman Seth Yurdin, and Adler’s Hardware, invited the community to the Historic Benefit Street Graffiti Clean-up Day from 9:00 A.M. until noon. Local residents and staff from businesses and organizations in the neighborhood donned cleaning gear and grabbed paintbrushes to reclaim buildings, monuments, and signs from being “taggers palettes” to once again highly regarded elements of our local built environment.
Close to 50 volunteers participated including PPS Executive Director Jack Gold and PPS Education Coordinator Kathleen McAreavey who were on signpost and bollard duty. Numerous volunteers from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence also participated with Adler’s Hardware donating more than $500 in cleaning supplies.
Sadly, there is a dire need for more of these clean-up days throughout the city. A very successful clean-up day took place last spring in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood and another is scheduled for the Summit neighborhood later on this month. VIPS Providence Urban Studies Students Tour the City with PPS
On July 19th PPS Children’s Heritage Education Docents Carol Ann Metallo and Frank Sparicio conducted a special Downtown Tour for twenty-five “Learn to Earn” Urban Architecture students studying in a special summer program with teacher Karlene Toppin through Volunteers in Providence Schools (VIPS). Career awareness is a major goal of the program along with an introduction to urban planning and revitalization. “As the students learned about urban revitalization this summer, information shared with the students about architecture and the history of the Downtown helped students appreciate the value of the buildings and years past,“ said Ms. Toppin. “The Downtown Tour helped students understand the importance of saving history and stories of the past that are told through the buildings located in the Downtown area.”
The students presented their projects to members of the Providence Planning Department and other adults on August 6, 2007. The projects included Kennedy Plaza, Atlantic Mills, Louitit Laundry, King Rental building in Olneyville, and the Armory.
Ms. Toppin will stay in touch with the students during the school year and monitor their academic progress. Whether or not students are struggling, the VIPS Tutoring Center will be encouraged as a place for support. In addition, three workshops will be scheduled for the students during the course of the school year and updates on community service and job/career fair opportunities will be shared.

Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit 2007
October 18 - November 10
Back by popular demand, the PPS Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit will take place this October 18 - November 10 in the atrium of The Peerless Building, 150 Union Street (near Westminster Street) in downtown Providence. Professional photographers generously donate their time to PPS to capture creatively all of this year’s Most Endangered Properties. The exhibit is a wonderful way to communicate PPS’s advocacy efforts through art. Photographers include: Michael Cevoli, David Ellis, Stephanie Ewens, Peter Goldberg, Erik Gould, Matt Kierstead, Scott Lapham, Brian MacDonald, Frank Mullin, David Simione, and Olivia Winter.
The Most Endangered Properties List is one of PPS’s most respected programs which helps to call attention to significant historic and architectural resources citywide that are endangered by threats such as deterioration, insufficient funds, insensitive public policy and inappropriate development —problems that frequently jeopardize properties throughout Providence.
The atrium of The Peerless Building is managed by Cornish Associates in cooperation with the Arts & Business Council of Rhode Island. The space is open to the public Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Fridays 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturdays 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Sundays 1:00- 5:00 p.m. A reception from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, a Gallery night, marks the exhibit’s opening. PPS will be partnering with Macy’s in Shop for a Cause on October 13. Macy’s celebrates a national day of support for local non-profit organizations and has chosen PPS as one of the featured non-profits. 2007 Dinner with a New View
October 20
PPS is proud to bring back its popular ‘Dinner with a View’ now renamed ‘Dinner with a New View’, which will take place the evening of Saturday, October 20 at the top of the GTECH building. This event will spotlight Providence’s new skyline around Waterplace Park. Tickets for the event are $150 per person; Patron tickets are available for $250 per person (includes Champagne reception in GTECH’S space). Invitations will be mailed to all members shortly. 2007 Holiday Festival and Benefit Street Stroll
December 7 and 8
This year’s Holiday Festival will be ushered in with a Patron’s Reception on December 7, 2007 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m at the RISD Museum. As guests mingle amidst the professionally decorated holiday cheer, they will sample delicious cuisines and listen to beautiful sounds of holiday music. On Saturday December 8, the celebration continues with a tour of houses from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Tour goers will be treated to a personal glimpse of historic Benefit Street architecture, decked out in its finest holiday splendor. PPS will be partnering with the City of Providence and the Providence/Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau to bring this year’s Benefit Street Stroll into downtown with the tree lighting and family skate in Kennedy Plaza. Preservation Awards Internship
Each year PPS acknowledges significant contributions to the preservation and revitalization of Providence’s historic resources. Award nominations are made by the public and each one is carefully researched and then presented to a committee of architects, architectural historians, and preservation professionals that chooses the award recipients. An intern is needed to assist with: solicitation of nominations from the membership and general public; historical and architectural research of nominated properties; correspondence with award nominees; site visits and photography; preparation of press releases and media packages; and assistance in designing mailings and brochures.
This unpaid internship requires 15-20 hours/week of availability. The internship will start on or after September 4 and conclude in mid-January (schedule is flexible to accommodate academic calendar). Web Design Internship/Volunteer Opportunity
This internship is currently available with PPS’s respected Most Endangered Properties Program. The Website Design Intern will build a new website especially for the 2007 Most Endangered Properties Program (linked from PPS website, www.ppsri.org). The site will feature oral history audio clips, histories of the buildings, architectural descriptions, historical photographs, current photographs, an interactive map, and a downloadable map/brochure with a driving route for visiting all of the properties.
This is an excellent opportunity for a college student or someone looking to build a portfolio and/or earn volunteer hours. The internship requires 10- 15 hours/week of availability. Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit Internship
An intern is needed to work on coordinating and curating the Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit. The intern will also work to coordinate the calendar for the traveling exhibit, securing space and being the primary contact for the various locations. Responsibilities include developing marketing strategy for photography exhibits; creating press releases and contacting the media to publicize Most Endangered Properties program events; coordinating production of print collateral including postcards, posters, and signage; assisting with exhibit installation and presentation; planning gallery opening and closing receptions; assisting Director of Preservation Services in working with professional photographers; and planning, curating, and coordinating traveling exhibit for Most Endangered Properties List.
This unpaid internship requires 15-20 hours/week of availability. The internship will start on or after September 4 and conclude in early December with potential to continue into the spring. Business/Executive Internship
An intern is needed to assist the Executive Director with projects related to historic preservation and city planning, grantsmanship, non-profit management, and - in general - furthering the mission of a busy cross-disciplinary environmental and cultural organization. Primary Internship Responsibilities may include: preparing agendas and conduct background research in advance of meetings; city-planning research issues especially as relating to waterfront, preservation and reclamation, and neighborhood density; assisting with preparation of letters and reports; researching foundations or other potential funding sources; attending committee meetings and preparing meeting minutes. Qualifications: Experience working in an office environment important and interest in historic preservation and historic architecture of Providence welcomed. This unpaid internship requires 10 hours/week of availability at the least. The internship will start in the fall of 2007 and conclude at the end of the semester, or school year, depending on the intern's schedule. Become a Childrens’ Heritage Education Docent!
The Providence Preservation Society is looking for individuals interested in leading walking tours for elementary and middle school students; grades 4-8. Each year docents lead over 3,500 students on walking tours of Providence. PPS's award-winning program uses the city's architecture as a textbook from which students learn the history of Providence. No previous experience is necessary; just an interest in history and/or architecture and the desire to work with school children. Upon completing a week-long training provided by PPS, docents are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. Holiday Festival Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for the Providence Preservation Society’s Holiday Festival and Benefit Street Stroll, which will take place on Friday, December 7th and Saturday, December 8th, 2007. This year’s Holiday Festival, a signature educational and fundraising event for the Providence Preservation Society will be a “family-friendly” celebration. Volunteers are asked to commit to a three-hour shift between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm on Saturday December 8th. Volunteers should enjoy working with the public and have a friendly demeanor. Responsibilities include: tour guide, greeting guests, pre-paid registration and ticket sales, street marshal, and book sales.
