William J. Murtagh, a "founding father" of the Modern Preservation Movement
Wednesday, September 19, 2007
7 p.m.
In honor of becoming a National Historic Landmark District in March 2007, The House of the Seven Gables is hosting a Preservation Lecture Series sponsored by US Trust/Bank of America. This first lecture in the series offers an overview of the preservation movement and changing philosophies by one of the world's leading historic preservationists, William J. Murtagh. The recipient of numerous honors, for more than fifty years, Murtagh has played a pivotal role in creating and professionalizing the field of historic preservation. Considered one of the "founding fathers" of the preservation movement, he helped shape the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and, as the first Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places, created standards which continue to safeguard the architectural heritage of the United States. Having taught at Columbia University, the University of Hawaii, the University of Florida, and the University of Maryland, he inspired generations of preservationists. A prolific lecturer, writer, and speaker, Murtagh literally wrote the book on preservation: Keeping Time, an overview of the preservation movement is still the basic text in preservation programs today.
Location: Visitor Center. Free and open to the public. Registration strongly recommended. Call 978.744.0991 ext. 107, or email rcohn@7gables.org.
