July 2010 News   2010 Festival of Historic Houses Celebrates the Wayland Historic District Eager tour-goers on June 5. On Saturday, June 5, tour-goers from around New England explored houses in the Wayland Historic District, which was added to the National Register in 2005. Long a favorite spring event in Providence, the 2010 Festival attracted 800 tour-goers who were dazzled by how these historic houses have been personalized by their owners and adapted for contemporary living. 140 enthusiastic volunteers stationed throughout the neighborhood helped make the event enjoyable as well as informative. An enthralled audience for Robert O. Jones. The afternoon also featured Robert O. Jones, Senior Architectural Historian with the Rhode Island Preservation & Heritage Commission, who presented a lecture titled "The History and Architecture of the Wayland Neighborhood" to a full audience of tour-goers. Wayland Square merchants supported the Festival through their donations from proceeds of a special shopping event on June 3. Guests enjoy the June 4 festivities with Mayor Cicilline. The Festival tours were preceded on June 4 by a pre-event fundraiser in an extraordinary circa 1929 East Side house. The capacity crowd buzzed with anticipation while listening to live renditions of jazz and musical standards of the 1930s accompanied by period cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. For more pictures of the Festival events, click here. Preservation Ten Most Endangered Properties The annual Ten Most Endangered Properties List was announced in May. The purpose of the list, selected from nominations submitted by community members, is to generate interest in and support for the preservation of threatened significant structures. Spotlight: RI Hospital Southwest Pavilion (1900)   The only surviving representative of the original Rhode Island Hospital campus, the Southwest Pavilion preserves the "Italian Gothic" architectural style of the original hospital buildings. Today, the building is unoccupied and is closely hemmed in by HVAC equipment and modern construction. Update: Atlantic Mills Towers (1863) On June 9, the PPS Planning and Architecture Review (PAR) Committee met with the owner, the general manager, and tenants of Atlantic Mills (MEP List 2009 and 2010) to tour the building and discuss potential restoration plans for the towers, which are falling into a state of disrepair. Atlantic Mills is considered to be among the most historically important mills in the country and is recognized as one of the most visually distinctive mills in the area.  The PAR Committee will continue to work with the owner and general manager, who are interested in finding ways to preserve this historic structure. Photography Exhibit this Fall!   PPS will present its annual Ten Most Endangered Properties photography exhibit this fall. This year's  exhibit will feature the work of professional photographers Jan Armor, Michael Cevoli, Ryan Conaty, Andrew Dernavich, Stephanie Ewens, Adam Hall, Deborah Hickey, Brian McDonald, Frank Mullin, and Traer Scott, who are already hard at work capturing details of these historic properties. Education Children's Heritage Education Tours Students on a Heritage Education tour. The Spring 2010 term for Heritage Education tours concluded on June 11. It was another busy season, with 877 students participating in 23 tours. PPS appreciates the many hours of hard work donated by the volunteer docents who lead these tours. PPS and Providence Career and Technical Academy Conclude Pilot Collaboration An opportunity for "hands-on" learning. PPS and the Providence Career and Technical Academy concluded their Spring 2010 pilot program collaboration on June 3 with a site visit to a carpentry shop specializing in historic preservation. Rob Cagnetta, president of Heritage Restoration, led a discussion about preservation issues faced there. The pilot program, which ran from January through June, consisted of four lectures and four site visits for carpentry and electrical trade students. Over the summer, the collaboration will be evaluated toward developing further programming. A colonial steeple. SAVE THE DATES! - October 20 - 23, 2010 Rhode Island Colonial Architecture:  Real, Revival, Survival The 14th Annual Salve Regina University Conference in Cultural & Historic Preservation will be conducted this year in collaboration with the Providence Preservation Society. Membership Business Membership Event: Keith Stokes Thursday, July 22, 8:30 a.m. GTECH Center 10 Memorial Boulevard Providence, RI 02903 Keith Stokes, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, will speak at the GTECH Center in Providence on Thursday, July 22 at 8:30 a.m. for PPS Business members and others. Mr. Stokes has wide-ranging professional experience in business, government, and community planning, including fifteen years as Executive Director of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce. His strong background in preservation includes service as a vice president and trustee of the Preservation Society of Newport County and as a state advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The event is free to Business members; admission is $30 for non-Business members. PPS is looking for volunteers to assist with general office/clerical tasks, including but not limited to answering a multi-line phone, greeting visitors, working on special projects, assisting with mailings. Experience with Microsoft Office programs a plus. Help needed Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.  Volunteers must be pleasant on the phone and able to handle multiple tasks at once. Community Notes National Trust for Historic Preservation Unveils New Interactive Website The National Trust wants you to tell the story of your historic house on its new website, @home. Upload and share photos, exchange restoration tips and information, and link with other local preservation enthusiasts. Empowering preservationists with social networking tools, @home brings preservation into the Facebook age.   The mission of the Providence Preservation Society (PPS) is to improve the quality of life in the city of Providence through historic preservation and the enhancement of the built environment. PPS is a nonprofit membership organization, exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and is recognized as a charitable organization.

A Fox Point Fourth of July

On July 3^rd, the scheduled 11:00 a.m. walking tour will be a patriotic stroll through the Fox Point neighborhood. Come celebrate the life and works of Providence native George M. Cohan, the original Yankee Doodle Dandy. He was born in one of the oldest and most diverse neighborhoods in Providence, and is associated by his birth and patriotic songs, with the Fourth of July. Learn about the ever-changing character of Fox Point, from its first colonial settlements through the waves of Irish, then Portuguese and Cape Verdean immigration, to the impacts of urban and highway development today. The tour begins at the George M. Cohan Plaza in Providence. Reservations are requested. $10 per person.

The George M. Cohan Plaza

George M. Cohan was born on Wickenden St. on July 3, 1878, and was one of the most famous songwriters, entertainers and producers of his day.  He became known as "the father of the American musical theatre" and at one time had five shows running simultaneously on Broadway.  He was nationally recognized as a great American patriot.  The celebration will include a review of the works of Cohan through song and dance, and a tribute to Broadway and jazz through the Great American Songbook with an emphasis on the works of composer George Gershwin. 

The second annual award for contribution to Rhode Island arts and culture will be presented to Professor Mike Fink of RISD. 

Mayor David Cicilline and other local dignitaries will be attending.

This is a free community event, please bring your own chairs.

How the East Indies Trade Transformed Anglo-American Capitalism

In his new book, So Great a Proffit, Dr. James R. Fichter explores how the Asia trade proved pivotal to the evolution of capitalism in the United States—at an earlier date than most of us realize—and helped to shape as well the trajectory of the British Empire. Dr. Fichter will discuss the role of Rhode Island and New England in the American trade to the East Indies in the period 1793-1815, when U.S. merchants challenged the East India Company's Asian trade. Merchants such as Rhode Islander Edward Carrington, Pennsylvanian Stephen Girard, and Marylander Robert Oliver worked with London merchants to create a rival system of trade and capital flows, which linked the United States to India, China, Java and other parts of the Indies. Fichter earned his bachelor's degree from Brown and holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard. He lives in Hong Kong where he has been teaching at Lingnan University for the last four years.
