The Rhode Island Historical Society in Providence, RI seeks an energetic, team-oriented
candidate for a temporary, part-time grant-funded position as a Field Surveyor for the Rhode
Island History Online Directory Initiative (RHODI). The successful candidate will report to the
RHODI Project Coordinator in the RIHS's Collections Department.
Job Responsibilities:
The Field Surveyor will visit organizations participating in the RHODI project to compile data
for the project directory; the surveyor will need to interact positively with organization staff
members while gathering data and conducting an initial organizational survey. The surveyor
will need to be mindful of the needs of smaller organizations.
Required Qualifications:
• Undergraduate degree or coursework towards a degree in History, Museum Studies or
Library and Information Science
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Familiarity with archival and museum collections and collections management principles
• Strong organization and time-management skill, accuracy and attention to detail
• Demonstrated reliable attendance. Because survey work will be done in teams of two,
timeliness and consistent attendance are essential to successful and timely project
completion
Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous archival, collections or institutional survey experience
• Experience with databases
• Accurate and rapid data entry
• Previous experience in collections management, cataloging, or processing archival or
museum collections
• Working knowledge of U. S. history; knowledge of Rhode Island history is preferred
