JOB SUMMARY:
This position is a full-time position in the Office of the Curator of the Supreme Court of the United States, in Washington, DC
The Office of the Curator serves the Supreme Court of the United States by promoting a greater public understanding and appreciation of the Nation's highest court. To this end, we collect the institution's rich history, share it with a diverse audience through a variety of programs, and preserve it for future generations. The office manages several programs in support of this mission including Courtroom lectures, building tours and changing exhibitions. The Visitor Programs Manager works primarily on visitor services and public programing. The incumbent manages and evaluates the volunteer docent and intern programs to include recruiting and hiring, and has the primary responsibility for conducting ongoing training and evaluation on subject matter and program delivery techniques. This position requires tact and diplomacy and someone who genuinely enjoys working with the public, volunteers, and staff in all levels of the organization. KEY REQUIREMENTS
DUTIES:
- Reporting to the Curator, manages visitor services for a diverse audience of over 350,000 annual visitors.
- Ensures effective operation of a fast-paced, multi-layered tour program and a visitor information desk.
- Manages the Curator's Office volunteer docent and internship programs including recruiting, screening, hiring, training, and staff evaluation.
- Develops, implements, and updates visitor management policies, procedures, and training materials and manuals.
- Supervises one full-time assistant, 30 volunteer docents, and 3-4 interns per semester.
- Contributes to the development of educational content for exhibitions and other visitor-related projects as needed.
- Leads tours for high-ranking dignitaries and other groups as necessary.
- Manages visitor programs related budget and contracts.
- Occasional evening and weekend work required.
- Other duties as assigned by Curator.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
· Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred, in related fields such as Museum Studies, Museum Education, History, American Studies, etc.
· At least 3 years relevant experience, with proven success in the management of visitor service programs.
· Demonstrated experience managing volunteer intern and/or docent programs.
· Must be a team builder who can motivate staff, maintain morale, and establish good working relationships with other departments.
· Confident and engaging public speaker and educator.
· Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate to a wide range of people with tact and diplomacy.
· Knowledge of museum education and interpretation principles and practices.
· Interest in Law, American History, and Art and Architecture a plus.
· Ability to multi-task and delegate duties.
· Strong record-keeping, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
