Curators select hidden gems
May is National Preservation Month, and in honor of this year's theme, "discovering America's hidden gems," Historic New England curators Nancy Carlisle and Laura Johnson have selected a few small but notable objects from our properties that you may not have noticed.  Beauport silhouette

At Beauport, Sleeper-McCann House, a small silhouette hangs in the North Gallery on the second floor. Perhaps overlooked amidst the sheer quantity and quality of items on view at Beauport, this gem is worth a peek. It is one of a handful of silhouettes cut by Everet Howard, who worked with a tracing device for profiles but, unlike most artists, embellished them at the baseline with elaborate designs cut free-hand. The small, round pewter frame was most likely made by Greenfield, Vermont, pewterer Samuel Pierce, who supplied several artists traveling in the region.

Gropius ring

Ise Gropius had exquisite taste in jewelry. Among the many treasures at Gropius House are her earrings and other ornaments in the boxes and dishes on her nightstand. Look for a large cocktail ring made from a rounded slab of clear acrylic pinned to a metal shank, and several pairs of Napier and Bergere earrings, made in Connecticut and Rhode Island, respectively.

Discover these hidden gems and many more during our Open House Saturday, June 2, when thirty-two properties are open for free.

This 100 Years, 100 Communities collaboration includes oral histories documenting the state's agricultural heritage and its importance to the residents who enjoy local produce and livestock.

The exhibition, Take Me to the Fair: An Addison County Tradition, is on view at the Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury, Vermont, through November 10. Images from the exhibition are available online.

Lecture series covers variety of topics for owners of old houses

Historic New England's recent weatherization project at the Lyman Estate aims to reduce energy consumption in the mansion by up to fifty percent. The project has helped us better understand how homeowners can make their old houses more energy efficient.

What better place to share this knowledge than the newly reopened Lyman Estate itself? Presented each Tuesday night in May, our Preservation Month series invites homeowners to hear from our experts on a variety of topics, from cost-effective weatherization projects to prioritizing maintenance.
