Enduring Trifles: Writing the History of Childhood with Ephemera

Young people have been targeted as a special market in the English-speaking
world's consumer culture since the early industrial period and the desire to
meet the developing child's needs and shape its identity and values provided
the print trades with an impeccable rationale for producing an array of
paper ephemera to "improve the shining hour" in the school room, the parlour
and beyond.

By highlighting the range of juvenile ephemera available from the eighteenth
century onwards, this conference will explore its potential for documenting
children's experiences. Speakers will examine aspects of the history of
childhood in Great Britain and the United States from the perspectives of
book history, gender studies, and the histories of science, religion,
political movements, education, and literature.  Subjects of presentations
will include paper dolls, writing sheets, cook books for Jewish children,
ephemera produced by the Puffin Club and Girl Guides, paperback covers,
poetry and manuscripts by children, grammar games, the figure of Moses, and
Peter Parley's scientific miscellanies.

The program will also include a round table on the special challenges of
collecting children's ephemera of making such materials available for
research and workshops on the juvenile theatre and Dean's rag books where
presenters will have actual artefacts on hand.
