Historic New England is opening a temporary welcome center and museum shop at the Old Corner Book Store in Boston from September 8 - October 10, Wednesday - Sunday, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Owned by Historic Boston, Inc., the store is located at the corner of Washington and School Streets in Boston's bustling Downtown Crossing neighborhood.
Inside we are presenting The Preservation Movement Then and Now, our exhibition that traces the development of historic preservation in New England; our centennial video, Defining the Past, Shaping the Future; book and gift sales; licensed products; brochures; and membership information. Two-for-one coupons to visit our historic sites will be available. We hope you'll stop by.

Program Spotlight:
Introduction to New England Furniture
 Historic New England presents Introduction to New England Furniture, a series of lectures on Tuesdays, October 12 - November 16. Explore New England furniture with this six-week course.
Five evenings combine lectures with in-depth examination of two or three pieces of furniture. Topics include how to learn everything you can by examination with a review of styles including seventeenth century and William and Mary, Queen Anne and Chippendale, Federal and Empire, and Victorian and Arts and Crafts. The sixth evening culminates in a special participatory workshop where students evaluate several pieces of furniture and report to the group, followed by a tour of Historic New England's extensive furniture storage facility. Introduction to New England Furniture is held at our Collections and Conservation Center in Haverhill, Massachusetts, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Admission is $75 for Historic New England members and $120 for non-members (includes a membership). | Greening the Lyman Estate
Plans are underway to turn the Lyman Estate, a popular location for weddings and other private functions, into an energy efficient historic venue for special events.
Preservation Maintenance Fund dollars will allow for new insulation, window sash restoration, replacement of the oil-fueled hot water boiler, air sealing, and replacement of storm windows. These improvements will decrease the energy costs associated with operating the mansion as a year-round event facility. This project is supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, secured in partnership with the Architectural Heritage Foundation and The Trustees of Reservations.
Historic New England's property care team will post project updates and images on our website while the estate is temporarily closed in 2011 (please note that the Lyman Greenhouses will remain open throughout the year).

Historic New England is pleased to announce the launch of the Ogden Codman Design Group, a new level of membership that enables design professionals and enthusiasts to experience the works and private homes of some of our nation's greatest design talents. The Ogden Codman Design Group is named after the noted early twentieth-century architect and interior designer Ogden Codman, Jr. He co-authored The Decoration of Houses with Edith Wharton, a book that revolutionized American interior design in the late nineteenth century. Members will have the opportunity to network and socialize with other design professionals at receptions, behind-the-scenes tours, and design-focused programs at such properties as the Codman Estate, Gropius House, and Beauport, Sleeper-McCann House.

Symposium on twentieth-century landscapes
The Cultural Landscape Foundation and Historic New England present Shaking Their Yankee Foundations: Evolving Modernist Ambitions at the Lyman Estate October 8. The symposium focuses on the unique Post-War legacy of public and private landscapes during what is now thought to be an optimistic time of innovation.
