Disaster Response: Prepare for an immediate response to a disaster

Disaster Response: Understand the immediate response to a disaster and what the chain of command will be from emergency responders. Learn what the threats are to your collection and how you can mitigate them. See the situation through the eyes of nationally certified professional conservators.

Topics covered will include the initial response, documentation and assessment, response logistics, and the division of tasks for the disaster response team. Table top exercises and a case study help students put theory into practice.

Bring a bag lunch and we will provide drinks and morning coffee.

Disaster Recovery: hands-on recovery of wet collections

Disaster Recovery, affectionately known as "the wet workshop", is an opportunity to work hands-on with conservators to see what happens to books, documents, and non-paper collection items when exposed to water and other hazardous materials. Most importantly, learn what to do if it happens to your collections! The session combines lecture on recovery techniques with hands-on salvage of wet collections and familiarizes participants with the various strategies employed for different media.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can get splashed or wet. We will provide gloves when necessary. Bring a bag lunch and we will provide drinks and morning coffee.

PREREQUISITE: Disaster Response (September 23 OR October 14)
