Art and the City walking tours

Rhode Island boasts one of the highest concentrations of visual artists in the country. Providence streets, parks, and the RiverWalk are full of public sculpture; some of which make fabulous "outdoor rooms." The stories of art, artists, the Providence Art Club, the Rhode Island School of Design, Gallery Night Providence, Waterfire and excellent urban design are inspirational.

The RISD Museum will be closed during the month of August. However, Providence is a gallery en plein air. Take a guided walking tour with the Rhode Island Historical Society's SummerWalks program. Feast your eyes; fill your soul; enjoy one of the best art cities in the country! Tickets are $10; tour lasts about ninety minutes.

La Fièvre des États/American Fever

The Museum of Work & Culture will host a presentation by McGill University history student, Brendan Shanahan, entitled "La Fièvre des États/American Fever" the American- French Genealogical Society. Shanahan will discuss the research he conducted as an intern at the Museum of Work & Culture concerning the French Canadian emigration history.  He will recount the many reasons for emigration found in French Canada during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the appeal of industrial employment in New England, and the various attempts by the French Canadian elite to prevent emigration to Protestant New England.  He will also question whether the emigration of French Canadians to New England truly represented a "Fièvre des Etats" (American Fever). The heightened importance of race and gender in American immigration policy during the 1840-1930's will also be addressed.  As a result of his research, new exhibit panels will be created and added to the Museum of Work & Culture's existing French Canadian Farmhouse exhibit.
