hits milestone
Historic New England is pleased to announce that through the generous support of many foundations, individual donors, and communities, we have reached our Preservation Maintenance Fund matching gift requirement for 2010. The fund was created by a $3 million, three-year anonymous foundation grant that called for $600,000 in matching funds this year.
The fund is allowing us to complete important preservation projects at our properties, from roof replacement at the Barrett House Carriage Barn (pictured) to structural work at the Codman Estate and landscaping at Roseland Cottage.
With a number of projects in the pipeline and a $1.2 million matching requirement for 2011, we need your help to make sure this work continues. Support the Preservation Maintenance Fund with an online gift.

Rhode Island gallery exhibition benefits Historic New England
 Newport, Rhode Island, art gallery owners Bill and Alison Vareika have chosen to celebrate our centennial in a very generous way. A percentage of sales from the current exhibition at their gallery, William Vareika Fine Arts, Ltd., will benefit Historic New England. The exhibition, simply entitled Historic New England, features works by artists from Gilbert Stuart to Andy Warhol that examine New England subjects in a variety of media, including photographs, watercolors, sculptures, and drawings. Stop by if you're planning a late-summer trip to Newport, or anytime before the exhibition closes on November 14. The Vareikas have also donated a $20,000 gift certificate to their gallery as part of Historic New England's centennial drawing. Entries must be postmarked by August 13. |
| Cottage window restored at Hamilton House
A recent visit to Hamilton House compelled New Hampshire businessman and filmmaker Michael Maglaras and his wife Terri Templeton to make a gift that allowed for the restoration of the large window on the South Berwick, Maine, estate's Garden Cottage.
"I've visited Hamilton House frequently for more than fifty years. My father knew Mrs. Vaughan, Hamilton House's last resident, well. It's a place of mystery and joy for me," said Maglaras. Maglaras and Templeton were married in nearby Vaughan Woods.
Conservation of this window is significant because it enhances the long-term preservation of the Colonial Revival estate. The Garden Cottage window is composed of a very fragile combination of segments that needed to be kept intact. The rotted elements of the framing were delicately removed and great care was taken to leave the interior raised panel wood intact and as much of the original framing below the rotted wood was retained.

| Appleton collection on display
William Sumner Appleton, the father of Historic New England's founder (of the same name), developed the most comprehensive nineteenth-century private collection of medals honoring George Washington, according to the Massachusetts Historical Society.
The elder Appleton was a co-founding member of the Boston Numismatic Society ("numismatic" meaning "of or pertaining to coins and medals"), and his collection of pieces depicting Washington will be on display until October 2, 2010, as part of the Massachusetts Historical Society exhibition Precious Metals: From Au to Zn.
