A Fox Point Fourth of July
On July 4th, the scheduled 11:00 a.m. walking tour will be a patriotic stroll through the Fox Point neighborhood. Come celebrate the life and works of Providence native George M. Cohan, the original Yankee Doodle Dandy. He was born in one of the oldest and most diverse neighborhoods in Providence, and is associated by his birth and patriotic songs, with the Fourth of July. Learn about the ever-changing character of Fox Point, from its first colonial settlements through the waves of Irish, then Portuguese and Cape Verdean immigration, to the impacts of urban and highway development today. The tour begins at the George M. Cohan Plaza in Providence. Reservations are requested. $10 per person.

George M, Cohan , the famous actor, singer, dancer, director, writer, and producer, was born on Wickenden St. in Fox Point on July 3, 1878. Called the father of the American musical comedy, he was known in his heyday as “the man who owned Broadway.”
 
The festivities begin on Friday, July 3 at 6:30 pm at Wickenden & Governor Sts. with a dedication ceremony with local dignitaries; the unveiling of a bronze statue of Cohan by internationally known sculptor, Robert Shure, the presentation of the first annual Excellence in Art & Culture Award to Curt Columbus, Artistic Director of Trinity Repertory Company; and musical entertainment by the Navy Band Northeast Ceremonial Band, singer Ian O'Brian and jazz musician Mike Miller. (Please bring your own folding chairs)
 
Saturday, July 4, at 11 am, a walking tour of Fox Point led by The Rhode Island Historical Society ($10), will meet at the corner of Wickenden & Governor Sts. Reservations requested at 401-331-8575, x45.  At 2 pm at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a lecture on the life of George M. Cohan by RISD Professor Mike Fink will be presented, followed by a screening of “Yankee Doodle Dandy” the Oscar winning film starring James Cagney.  In the evening, all are invited to India Point Park for more entertainment and fireworks.

Nathanael Greene: A Biography of the American Revolution
In writing his book Nathanael Greene: A Biography of the American Revolution, Gerald Carbone drew on his 25 years of research experience as a newspaper reporter to ferret out the facts on this overlooked hero. Much of the biography was previously published in serial form in the Providence Journal, and Carbone has been recognized as an expert on Greene by the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, the University Club of Providence, and the RIHS.

Over one thousand glass plate negatives have long lain forgotten in the Special Collections of the Providence Public Library. Now a select handful of them will be hand printed and revealed to the public eye, possibly for the very first time. The project was conceived and curated by Agata Michalowska and was brought to bear through a close collaboration with local photographers working out of the AS220 Paul Krot Community Darkrooms. Around two dozen plates will be printed and exhibited along with a selection of glass negatives. The plates represent a wide range of topics including portraits of wealthy Rhode Island families, interiors of textile factories, and landscapes of New England. These glass negatives constitute a cabinet of wonders and a glimpse of a world long past.

During the opening reception, on June 1st, James DaMico and Richard Ring will lend their expertise to help us further imagine the stories these photographs quietly suggest. DaMico, the Rhode Island Historical Society's Graphics Archivist, will talk about the technical development of photography with his presentation "Glass plate negatives: A Look at a 19th Century Photographic Innovation".  Richard Ring, Providence's Special Collections Librarian, will offer us an informed historical perspective on the city at the dawn of the twentieth century with his presentation, "The Beehive of Industry: Providence in the Late Victorian Era, 1890-1910”.

If These Walls Could Talk … Man with a Horn: Cornetist Bobby Hackett
Come celebrate the life and music of Rhode Island’s own jazzman Bobby Hackett with a retrospective on his decades-long career. Dr. Steven Kane will lead this tribute presentation, which includes some examples of Hackett’s recorded works.
