REMINDER
Heritage In America's Great Outdoors
Blackstone Valley:
From Heritage Corridor To National Park
Stadium Theatre
Saturday, April 21 At 9 AM

The John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor (JHCBRVNHC) and the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC) present "Heritage in America's Great Outdoors," a public presentation at the historic Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket on Saturday, April 21, from 9:00 - 10:45am. The free event includes an illustrated lecture by Dr. Stephanie Smith Toothman, the Associate Director for Cultural Resources of the National Park Service, as well as opening remarks by Mayor Leo T. Fontaine of Woonsocket, Maia Farish of Roger Williams University, and Edward F. Sanderson of the RIHPHC.

Dr. Toothman's lecture, "Heritage in America's Great Outdoors," will place the Blackstone River Valley park bid in the broader perspective of the National Park Service's century-long commitment to preserving America's cultural and natural heritage. Dr. Toothman will help us envision the National Park Service's second century-where new initiatives harness the collective power of the parks, historic preservation programs, and natural heritage areas and where new partnerships leverageadditional resources. The Blackstone Valley offers excellent examples of these new approaches.

New National Register Plaques To Be Placed Along The Blackstone Canal
Ranger Chuck Arning shows off a new plaque to be placed in Lincoln, RI marking an intact piece of the Blackstone Canal that has been named to the National Register of Historic Places. Four other plaques will also be placed along the canal in Grafton, MA, Sutton, MA, Millbury, MA and Woonsocket, RI. All five plaques are expected to be in place by early summer.

Dr. Toothman To Tour The Valley April 20

In conjunction with her visit to the Valley for the RI Preservation conference, Dr. Stephanie Toothman will be visiting several sites in the Blackstone Valley.  Her agenda has not been confirmed at this point but we anticipate that she will visit Slater Mill, Roger Williams national memorial, Ashton, Whitinsville, and other locations throughout the Valley.

Construction Related Bikeway Closures Announced

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has announced that work on the I-295 bridge will result in closure of a section of the Blackstone River Bikeway between Albion Road and Front St. on Monday, April 23 (and possibly Tuesday, April 24, depending on the progress of the crews) between 6:00am and 4:00pm. The closure is required to protect the public from debris falling during demolition operations, which are meant to cut access holes in the deck of Bridge #750 directly above the bike path.

The gates will be closed at approximately 6:00am and anyone on the bikeway will be escorted off. The gates will be opened as soon as demolition activities have completed and as soon as it is safe for public to resume use of this section.
