On Wednesday, June 23rd, Michael Kaiser, the president of the Kennedy Center, will bring his free 50 state "Arts in Crisis" tour to Rhode Island. Mr. Kaiser will address the challenges facing nonprofit arts organizations today in areas including fundraising, building more effective boards of trustees, budgeting and marketing. While Mr. Kaiser will speak from a performing arts perspective, his message is important for all nonprofit arts organizations and arts leaders.

All arts administrators, artistic directors, board members and arts leaders should attend!

"Kaiser's national tour is his response to what he describes as a national arts crisis. But by the end of Thursday's talk, the mood at the Gerding [Theatre] was buoyant. The crowd was inspired."

"During the 90 minute public conversation, [Kaiser] addressed a wealth of prescient arts funding and management issues. But perhaps the most salient advice Kaiser relayed to those in attendance were his 10 guiding rules for arts funding and management:

1. Leadership is crucial; 2. So is planning; 3. Saving money isn't the sole answer; 4. Focus on the present and future, not the past; 5. Extend programming calendars; 6. Marketing is more than glossy brochures; 7. Don't send mixed messages; 8. Achieve diverse funding sources and don't rely solely on one big donation; 9. Assemble a committed board; and 10. Show discipline in following all of the rules."
