New Beginnings: 188th Annual Meeting of the Rhode Island Historical Society
On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, the Rhode Island Historical Society will hold its 188th Annual Meeting to renew the past year and celebrate our progress and achievements, looking to our new beginnings for the future! This year, we are delighted to have highly successful and noted historian, Dr. Maury Klein as our keynote speaker. Join us to hear his fascinating discussion entitled “1929 and 2008: Similarities and Differences.” Maury Klein is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Rhode Island. He is the author of fifteen books and numerous articles in scholarly journals and magazines. A reception will immediately follow the conclusion of the business meeting and speaking program. Admission is free, but RSVP by October 25, 2009.

Jewish Genealogy Workshop
This two-part genealogy workshop is offered in collaboration with the Rhode Island Jewish Historical Association. The first session includes an overview of RIJHA resources on families in the local community, and a live demonstration of online resources for teasing out the details of your family’s history in the U.S. and in the Old Country. The second session focuses on RIHS resources and leaves time for hands-on research under the guidance of RIHS staff and workshop leaders. Presenters include Barbara Carroll, who has been doing genealogical and historical research since 1986, and Dr. George M. Goodwin is co-editor of "The Jews of Rhode Island" and editor of "Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes." The fee per session is $15 for RIHS and RIJHA members, and $20 for non-members. Please register in advance by calling 273-8107 x12. Space is limited to 20 participants.

The Rhode Island Historical Society presents Home Movie Day 2009!
Do you have home movies on film you haven’t seen in years? Don’t throw them away -bring them to Home Movie Day. Don’t have any films of your own? Come on down and watch someone else’s! Local film archivists will be on hand to discuss film preservation, home movies, and amateur films of regional interest. Bring your home movies and/or amateur films on 8mm, super 8mm, and 16mm to be screened, (sorry, no video) on the following drop off days: Saturday, October 10, Wednesday, October 21, Thursday, October 22, and Friday, October 23 from 10 – 5 pm. Drop off location is the Rhode Island Historical Society Library, 121 Hope Street, Providence. The films you bring need not have been made by you or your family. Films will be screened on a first-come, first-serve basis. Screen time is limited. We will show as many films as time allows.

RiverWalk: Before the Fires are Lit
Discover the winding history and continued importance of Providence’s rivers! Urban outdoor sculpture and beautiful civic and commercial buildings of varied architectural styles provide the setting for stories of Providence’s fabled past and dynamic present. This walk shares the history of Rhode Island’s capital city and the history of WaterFire. $10 per person. Reservations requested for this tour.
