History Buffs, Walkers, and Talkers Needed… Tour Guide Training
The Rhode Island Historical Society is now recruiting energetic, inquisitive lovers of history to be volunteer museum guides and educators at its John Brown House Museum in Providence. The Society is also recruiting guides for its SummerWalks historical walking tour program, which presents tours of Benefit Street, College Hill, and RiverWalk. Formal training for SummerWalks will begin in March, but all interested individuals are welcome to attend John Brown House Museum training for an introduction to the Rhode Island Historical Society.

Training takes place at the John Brown House Museum, 52 Power Street, Providence, RI. Pre-registration for training classes is required. For more information, please email dsantos@rihs.org or call (401) 273-7507 x60.

“Governors on Tour”
This exhibit commemorates the restoration of the Rhode Island Governors’ portraits by the Rhode Island State House Restoration Society through the Gallery of Governors Project. The exhibit will feature portraits of governors from northern Rhode Island.

Ranger Days
In conjunction with the John H. Chaffee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, the Museum of Work & Culture is pleased to host another year of Ranger Days. Today, URI Professor Scott Molloy will speak on his new book, Irish Titan, Irish Toilers: Joseph Banigan and 19th Century New England Labor, the story of Banigan’s rise as Rhode Island’s first Irish millionaire and founder of the U.S. Rubber Company.

ON EXHIBIT -- January 5 thru February 2009
PPL Special Collections: Nicholson Whaling Collection:
There are over 15,000 known American offshore (or “pelagic”) whaling voyages from the 1700s to the 1920s (not including the modern factory ship voyages of the mid-20th century). Of those, there are logbook records extant (complete and partial) for approximately 5,000 voyages. Providence Public Library’s collection of over 800 volumes containing entries related to over 1,000 voyages, constitutes 20 percent of all known and extant American whaling logs and journals.
