A message from R. Tripp Evans and Christine West, Co-Chairs, 2012 Providence Symposium steering committee:
This year's speakers, panels, and special events will provoke and challenge our assumptions about preservation. They invite you to consider the obscure characters, locations, and plot twists in the story of Providence's preservation - and to grapple with the issues that make preservation as difficult as it is rewarding for the architects, homeowners, and historians who engage in it.
We invite you to take a second look at familiar places: Briann Greenfield on the Benefit Street preservation story you haven't heard; Brian Sirmin and Morgan Grefe on the endangered buildings we may find difficult to love; and Tom Michie on the historic room as collector's item. Join panel conversations about sustaining neighborhoods, green architecture, the fate of the city's industrial fabric, and the politics behind preservation; see a documentary about the fall - and rise - of Providence's South Side; tour College Hill from a new vantage point. On behalf of the entire steering committee, please join us for a new perspective on Providence, and on preservation itself.
