Please join us for a presentation of "Harvard and Slavery: Seeking a
Forgotten History" and a discussion of slavery and universities

On Wednesday, November 16th, from 5:15pm-7:00pm, the Harvard and Slavery
Research Project will host a presentation and discussion of its publication
"Harvard and Slavery: Seeking a Forgotten History." The publication grew out
of research by graduate and undergraduate students at Harvard and is
supported by the Office of Harvard's President. It covers first-findings in
the long history of Harvard's relationship with slavery, from slaves who
worked on campus in the colonial era, to Harvard's nineteenth-century era
patronage by merchants of slave-grown sugar, coffee, and cotton, and
sometime even slaves, to the role of Harvard professors in popularizing
race-science in the 19th and 20th century. While other prominent
universities have made efforts to uncover such stories from their past, this
is the first time a public discussion on the topic will be held at Harvard.

The event will take place in Gund Hall (Graduate School of Design) in the
Portico Rooms, 121-123, and will feature presentations by students, comments
by Craig Wilder, Professor of History of MIT, and a discussion moderated by
Evelyn Higginbotham, Victor S. Thomas Professor of History and of African
and African American Studies at Harvard.
