4) CFP: Rhode Island in the Civil War, Memory and History - April 8,
2011 (Providence, Phode Island, USA)

The Department of History at Rhode Island College, in conjunction with
the Rhode Island Historical Society and the Rhode Island State
Archives, is sponsoring a symposium entitled "Rhode Island in the
Civil War," commemorating the sesquicentennial of the State's
participation in the American Civil War on Friday April 8, 2011.  This
symposium will center on public history, examining the history and
memory of the event through commemoration, scholarly interpretations,
and re-enactments that bring the scholarly community into direct
contact with current popular interpretations.  The day itself will be
divided into a morning of experience, with reenactors of the Rhode
Island 14th Artillery Regiment (Colored) drilling participants and
performing short plays about African American life during the Civil
War, and an afternoon of academic presentations and discussions.

The Department of History invites papers on a variety of topics
related to the themes of Civil War memory, commemoration, and history,
but papers relating specifically to Rhode Island in the Civil War are
especially desired.  To submit a proposal for a paper or presentation,
please send an abstract and brief bio to echristiansen@ric.edu by
February 1, 2011.  A modest subsidy for travel to the conference will
be available to presenters.
