Oral History and Scanning Workshop
Are you interested in starting an oral history project but unsure about where to begin or how to proceed? Would you like to preserve your own family history but need to learn the techniques of scanning and conducting oral histories? Dr. Anne M. Valk, associate director of programs at the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage at Brown University, will lead this free workshop on the stages of an oral history project from inspiration to final product. You will learn how to define a project, develop interview topics and questions, record and preserve your interviews, create outreach and programming, and understand legal and ethical protocols. Time will also be set aside to go over how to properly organize and digitize your family photos and papers. Valk has worked extensively on community oral history projects in New England, the Midwest, and the South, examining experiences of immigration, industrialization, deindustrialization, and racial segregation. She has taught oral history classes and workshops for audiences ranging from university classes and museum professionals to volunteer community groups and public school teachers. This workshop is co-sponsored by the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage and supported in part by the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission. Space is limited, please register in advance. Admission is free, lunch is included.
