UPDATE: Former Police and Fire Headquarters
The owners of the Former Police and Fire Headquarters at 197 Fountain Street, The Procaccianti Group (TPG) of Cranston, have applied for and received a demolition permit. This demolition permit comes after a June 29 letter issued by the Providence Department of Inspection and Standards calling for the immediate demolition of the building due to safety concerns. While the West Broadway and College Hill Neighborhood Associations have filed an appeal with the city because they believe that the Acting Building Official was in error in stating that the building is structurally unstable, the PPS Board of Trustees, at their July 17 meeting, expressed general consensus that public safety issues are of paramount concern and that it would not be prudent for PPS to sign on to a second appeal. The Building Board of Review will hear their case on Wednesday, August 1.
The Former Police and Fire Headquarters is featured on the 2007 Most Endangered Properties List. The Art Deco building has been vacant since the Police and Fire Departments were relocated to the Public Safety Complex in 2002. TPG has proposed an office tower and parking garage for the site but development plans are in very early stages. If the building is demolished soon, the site will likely exist as a surface parking lot for the foreseeable future.

Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit 2007
October 18 - November 10
Back by popular demand, the PPS Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit will take place this October 18 - November 10 at The Space at Alice, an esteemed downtown gallery behind City Hall at 70 Eddy Street. Professional photographers generously donate their time to PPS to capture creatively all of this year’s Most Endangered Properties. The exhibit is a wonderful way to communicate PPS’s advocacy efforts through art. Photographers include: Michael Cevoli, David Ellis, Stephanie Ewens, Peter Goldberg, Erik Gould, Matt Kierstead, Scott Lapham, Brian MacDonald, Frank Mullin, David Simione, and Olivia Winter.
The Most Endangered Properties List is one of PPS’s most respected programs which helps to call attention to significant historic and architectural resources citywide that are endangered by threats such as deterioration, insufficient funds, insensitive public policy and inappropriate development —problems that frequently jeopardize properties throughout Providence.
The Space at Alice is a cooperative gallery managed by the Arts & Business Council of Rhode Island located at 70 Eddy Street Providence, RI. Additional information on gallery hours and gallery receptions coming soon.

2007 Dinner with a New View
October 20
PPS is proud to bring back its popular ‘Dinner with a View’ now renamed ‘Dinner with a New View’, which will take place the evening of Saturday, October 20th at the top of the GTECH building. This event will spotlight Providence’s new skyline around Waterplace Park. Stay tuned for more details.

2007 Holiday Festival and Benefit Street Stroll
December 7 and 8
This year’s Holiday Festival will be ushered in with a Patron’s Reception on December 7, 2007 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. As guests mingle amidst the professionally decorated holiday cheer, they will sample delicious cuisines and listen to beautiful sounds of holiday music. On Saturday December 8, 2007, the celebration continues with a tour of houses from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Tour goers will be treated to a personal glimpse of historic Benefit Street architecture, decked out in its finest holiday splendor. The Benefit Street Stroll will follow the tour on Saturday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Registration Full for 2007 Realtor Training - Accepting Registrations for 2008
PPS is pleased to report that registration for its intensive two-day training session designed to help realtors market historic homes is full for 2007. All realtors on the waiting list are automatically registered for the 2008 seminar to be held Thursday, October 23 & Friday, October 24, 2008. Acceptance of payment will begin February 1, 2008. Room is still available for the 2008 class. Class size is limited to the first 25 registrants.
Seminar graduates will be certified as Historic House Specialists by the Providence Preservation Society and authorized to use the PPS Historic House Specialist logo. The course is certified for 10 hours of CE credit by the RI Division of Business Regulation Real Estate Division, and is endorsed by the Greater Providence Board of Realtors. Some topics to be covered by local experts in their field include:
* Architectural Styles of Providence's Historic Homes
* Historic House Interiors
* Historic Districts and How They Impact Homeowners
* How to Research the History of a House
Participants will receive a copy of A Field Guide to American Houses. The seminar also includes lunch on day one and a field trip to a preservation trades workshop plus a bus tour featuring Providence's historic neighborhoods and architectural styles on day two.

Preservation Awards Internship
Each year PPS acknowledges significant contributions to the preservation and revitalization of Providence’s historic resources. Award nominations are made by the public and each one is carefully researched and then presented to a committee of architects, architectural historians, and preservation professionals that chooses the award recipients. An intern is needed to assist with: solicitation of nominations from the membership and general public; historical and architectural research of nominated properties; correspondence with award nominees; site visits and photography; preparation of press releases and media packages; and assistance in designing mailings and brochures.
This unpaid internship requires 15-20 hours/week of availability. The internship will start on or after September 4 and conclude in mid-January (schedule is flexible to accommodate academic calendar). Web Design Internship/Volunteer Opportunity
This internship is currently available with PPS’s respected Most Endangered Properties Program. The Website Design Intern will build a new website especially for the 2007 Most Endangered Properties Program (linked from PPS website). The site will feature oral history audio clips, histories of the buildings, architectural descriptions, historical photographs, current photographs, an interactive map, and a downloadable map/brochure with a driving route for visiting all of the properties.

Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit Internship
An intern is needed to work on coordinating and curating the Most Endangered Properties Photography Exhibit. The intern will also work to coordinate the calendar for the traveling exhibit, securing space and being the primary contact for the various locations. Responsibilities include developing marketing strategy for photography exhibits; creating press releases and contacting the media to publicize Most Endangered Properties program events; coordinating production of print collateral including postcards, posters, and signage; assisting with exhibit installation and presentation; planning gallery opening and closing receptions; assisting Director of Preservation Services in working with professional photographers; and planning, curating, and coordinating traveling exhibit for Most Endangered Properties List.
This unpaid internship requires 15-20 hours/week of availability. The internship will start on or after September 4 and conclude in early December with potential to continue into the spring. Business/Executive Internship
An intern is needed to assist the Executive Director with projects related to historic preservation and city planning, grantsmanship, non-profit management, and - in general - furthering the mission of a busy cross-disciplinary environmental and cultural organization. Primary Internship Responsibilities may include: preparing agendas and conduct background research in advance of meetings; city-planning research issues especially as relating to waterfront, preservation and reclamation, and neighborhood density; assisting with preparation of letters and reports; researching foundations or other potential funding sources; attending committee meetings and preparing meeting minutes. Qualifications: Experience working in an office environment important, and interest in historic preservation and historic architecture of Providence welcomed. This unpaid internship requires 10 hours/week of availability at the least. The internship will start in the fall of 2007 and conclude at the end of the semester, or school year, depending on the intern's schedule. CALL FOR VOLUNTEER STORY TELLERS
Help Preserve Providence’s Most Endangered Historic Properties
PPS is in the process of conducting research for a new oral history project connected to its recently issued Most Endangered Properties List for 2007. This year, as part of our public advocacy efforts, we will have a property-tour website equipped with route maps and sound bites as well as an exhibit this fall where viewers will be able to see a rich collection of photographs taken by some of Rhode Island’s most notable professional photographers. As a collection of recorded stories from citizens with personal experience and history with the properties, the Oral History Collection: 2007 Most Endangered Properties will act as a collective memory for the life of the buildings.
This is where we would like to hear from you especially. Do you or does anyone you know have a story to tell about one of the properties on this year’s List? We are interested in hearing from people who have directly lived or worked in the buildings; however family members, neighbors and other community members may also have a story to tell and we would love to hear from them as well. Even a small, seemingly irrelevant personal experience, when combined with others like it begins to take shape. Become a Childrens’ Heritage Education Docent!
The Providence Preservation Society is looking for individuals interested in leading walking tours for elementary and middle school students; grades 4-8. Each year docents lead over 3,500 students on walking tours of Providence. PPS's award-winning program uses the city's architecture as a textbook from which students learn the history of Providence. No previous experience is necessary; just an interest in history and/or architecture and the desire to work with school children. Upon completing a week-long training provided by PPS, docents are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. Holiday Festival Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for the Providence Preservation Society’s Holiday Festival and Benefit Street Stroll, which will take place on Friday, December 7th and Saturday, December 8th, 2007. This year’s Holiday Festival, a signature educational and fundraising event for the Providence Preservation Society will be a “family-friendly” celebration. Volunteers are asked to commit to a three-hour shift between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm on Saturday December 8th. Volunteers should enjoy working with the public and have a friendly demeanor. Responsibilities include: tour guide, greeting guests, pre-paid registration and ticket sales, street marshal, and book sales.
